On January 6, Rowan Atkinson, known for his role in and as Mr. Bean, celebrates his birthday. He turned 55 this year and is trending massively on social media pages. Rowan’s statement on ‘cancel culture’ grabbed eyeballs during a recent interaction and has become an Internet subject of discussion. The veteran English actor compared it to a ‘mediaeval mob wandering the streets looking for someone to burn.’
As reported in the Deadline, Rowan said to Radio Times, “The issue we’ve got online is that an algorithm decides what we want to see, which ends up creating a simplicity, binary view of society. It becomes the case that you are either with us or against us. And you deserve to be “cancelled” if you’re against us.”
He also spoke of the fear of the future, saying, “It’s important that we’re exposed to a wide spectrum of opinion, but what we have now is the digital equivalent of the mediaeval mob roaming the streets looking for someone to burn. So, for anyone who is a victim of that mob, it’s frightening and it fills me with fear about either the future.
In the meantime, “When asked about Mr. Bean, his famous character, Rowan said on the same show, “Having done an animated TV series, we are now in the foothills of Mr. Bean’s animated film development. Performing the character vocally is easier for me than visually.
He added, “I don’t much enjoy playing him. The weight of responsibility is not pleasant. I find it stressful and exhausting, and I look forward to the end of it.”
Atkinson concluded by saying, “Mr. Bean’s excellence has never amazed me. It’s fundamentally funny to watch an adult behave in a childish way without being slightly aware of his inappropriateness.
