The rebranding route takes another year and another team and it’s the turn of the Punjab franchise this time. Before changing the name, logo, or both in the past, teams like Deccan Chargers, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Rising Pune Supergiant and recently the Delhi Capitals have been on the rebranding route. Kings XI Punjab, like the Delhi Daredevils, became a thing of the past.

The Mohali-based franchise, from now on, will be called the Punjab Kings. Satish Menon, CEO of Punjab Kings, said, talking about rebranding, “Punjab Kings is a more evolved brand name, and we understand that it was the right time for us to focus on the core brand itself. The change in brand identity is not about changing our brand ethos, but celebrating our unity as we stand as a family in unity.”The new logo honours the brand’s liveliness and vibrancy and provides modern elements, while the rest of the teams are distinguished.

Team owner Preity Zinta will meet with skipper KL Rahul and explosive opener Chris Gayle almost later in the day to unveil the logo and name publicly.

But, little did they know that hilarious memes would be inspired by the name because the fans didn’t like the new name. The minute change of dropping ‘XI’ from the name and exchanging the remaining two words does not contribute much to the fans’ rebranding and PK’s initials have inspired another flurry of memes as it coincides with the 2014 Bollywood film starring Aamir Khan, Anushka Sharma and Sushant Singh Rajput of the same name.
