Kisan Diwas 2020: Due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, farmers across the globe are severely affected. And the role of farmers in our lives, and the economy at large, can simply not be undermined. Every year, on December 23, India celebrates Kisan Diwas or National Farmer’s Day. In honour of former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh, the 5th Prime Minister of India, who was born on that day, this day is celebrated. On this day, the former prime minister is celebrated and honoured because he introduced farmer-friendly policies and worked towards farmers’ welfare. Between July 1979 and January 1980, he served as Prime Minister.
This Day’s History:
During his short time as a Prime Minister, Chaudhary Charan Singh introduced several schemes for the farmers. The government decided in 2001 to observe the anniversary of Charan Singh’s birth as Kisan Diwas.
This day’s significance:
This day is being observed to raise awareness of farmers and their role in the economy. During his time, Charan Singh worked to bring small and marginal farmer issues to the forefront. He addressed the issues and made sure that the voice of the farmer was heard.
On December 23, 1978, Charan Singh founded the Kisan Trust to spread awareness of farmers’ problems in the country. Not only that, Charan Singh also introduced the Debt Redemption Bill in 1939 in order to allow the moneylenders to relieve farmers. In 1952, he served as Minister of Agriculture and abolished the zamindari system, and the Consolidation of Holdings Act was also enacted later in 1953.
The former PM has always made an effort to ensure equal opportunities for farmers and that they are not exploited. He also worked for the welfare of the farm sector and the cottage industries. In New Delhi, his memorial is named the Kisan Ghat. On National Farmers’ Day, several events are organised across the country to encourage farmers and celebrate their contributions to the country.
The Facts About Chaudhary Charan Singh
Born in 1902 in Noorpur, Meerut, Chaudhary Charan Singh was a farmer’s family. He was a Kishan leader who served as Prime Minister for five months and 17 days (July 28, 1979, to January 14, 1980). He believed in the slogan ‘Jai Jawan Jai Kisan,’ introduced by the 2nd Prime Minister of India, Lal Bahadur Shastri.
Chaudhary Charan Singh lived a simple life and wrote several books on the problems of farmers. He also introduced solutions to most of the issues in those books that he mentioned. He tried his best to save farmers from moneylenders and landlords’ evil intentions.
