Prime Minister Narendra Modi is visiting poll-bound Tamil Nadu and Puducherry today to inaugurate and pave the way for various development initiatives, including key Tamil Nadu power projects. According to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), at around 11:30 AM in Puducherry, the prime minister will inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of various development initiatives. At around 4 pm, he will dedicate the country and lay the foundation stone of several infrastructure projects in Coimbatore worth more than Rs 12,400 crore.
In Tamil Nadu, a lignite-based power plant designed for 1000 MW power generation capacity with two 500 MW capacity units each, the Prime Minister will dedicate to the nation the Neyveli New Thermal Power Project. The pit head power plant, built at a cost of approximately Rs 8,000 crore, will use lignite as fuel from the existing Neyveli mines, which have sufficient lignite reserves to meet the project’s lifetime requirements, the statement said.
The plant has been designed for 100 percent ash use and Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Puducherry would benefit from the power generated, with Tamil Nadu having the major share of about 65 percent, it said.
The Prime Minister will also dedicate NLCIL’s 709 MW solar power project to the nation, set up across the districts of Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, Ramanathapuram, and Virudhunagar over an area of about 2,670 acres of land. At a price of over Rs 3,000 crore, the project was set up.
Modi will also lay the foundation stone for the extension, renovation, and modernisation of the Lower Bhavani Project System.
In 1955, the Bhavanisagar dam and the channel systems were completed. Over 2 lakh acres of land in Erode, Tiruppur, and Karur districts is irrigated by the Lower Bhavani System.
The Lower Bhavani System has been expanded, renovated, and modernized at a cost of Rs 934 crore under NABARD Infrastructure Development Assistance, the PMO said.
The eight-laning Korampallam Bridge and Rail Over Bridge (ROB) at V.O.Chidambaranar Port, one of India’s major ports, will also be inaugurated by the prime minister.
Currently, 76% of the cargo is transported by road from or to the port using the existing Korampallam bridge, built at the beginning of 1964 with a 14-m wide carriageway.
The eight-laning project for the existing Korampallam Bridge and Rail Over Bridge has been implemented, the PMO said, in order to ensure the seamless evacuation of cargo and to avoid congestion in the port area.
The project, to be set up at an estimated cost of approximately Rs 20 crore, will generate more than 80 lakh (KWH) units per year, accounting for 56% of the Port’s overall energy consumption, thereby helping to reduce the carbon footprint of port operations.
The Prime Minister will inaugurate the tenements built under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) system in order to increase the ease of life. At a cost of over Rs 330 crore, these tenements were built.
Each of these tenements has a 400 square foot plinth area to be allocated to urban poor or slum dwellers, and a multipurpose hall, bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, and toilet have been provided.
In nine smart cities—Coimbatore, Madurai, Salem, Thanjavur, Vellore, Tiruchirappalli, Tiruppur, Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi—the Prime Minister will also lay the foundations for the development of Integrated Command and Control Centers (ICCC).
These ICCCs would be developed at a cost of about Rs 107 crore and would act as a 24×7 support system, providing smart solutions for faster services in real-time, with the aim of integrating essential government services and allowing data-based decision-making, the statement said.
The Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone in Puducherry for the 4-laning NH 45-A-56 km Sattanathapuram-Nagapattinam package from Villupuram to Nagapattinam project covering the district of Karaikal.
In this project, the cost of capital to be incurred is about Rs 2,426 crore. The foundation stone of the Medical College Building at Karaikal New Campus will also be laid. Phase I, Karaikal District (JIPMER). Rs. 491 crore is the estimated project cost.
Under the Sagarmala system, the prime minister will lay the foundation stone for the development of the Minor Port in Puducherry.
It will provide connectivity to Chennai and facilitate the movement of cargo for industries in Puducherry, estimated to be built at Rs 44 crore.
A 100-bed girls’ hostel at Lawspet, Puducherry, will also be opened by the prime minister. It has been constructed under the aegis of the Sports Authority of India for female athletes at a cost of about Rs 12 crore. He will also inaugurate the rebuilt Marie Building Heritage.
