Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Congressman Ghulam Nabi Azad on Tuesday and was moved while bidding farewell to the leader of the opposition from Rajya Sabha. PM Modi said that “posts come, high office comes, power comes and how to handle these, one must learn from Ghulam Nabi Azad Ji” “I would think of him as a true friend,” he said.
PM Modi recounted a story about how Ghulam Nabi Azad was at the forefront of operations during a terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir and committed himself to his service to the nation.
“I’ll never forget the efforts of Azad and Pranab Mukherjee when people from Gujarat were stuck in Kashmir following a terrorist attack,” he said.
There was a terrorist attack on pilgrims in Jammu and Kashmir from Gujarat. At first, Ghulam Nabi Azad called me. The phone wasn’t just for the information, his tears didn’t stop. That time Pranab Mukherjee was the Minister of Defense and requested the body to be transported by Indian Air Force jet. He said not to worry, we’re going to figure something out. But, Ghulam Nabi again called me. He was at that airport,’ said the PM.
In June 2014, Azad was appointed as the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha after the government was formed by the BJP-led NDA. Azad was re-elected from Jammu and Kashmir to the Rajya Sabha in 2015, despite the PDP-BJP alliance holding a majority of seats in the Legislative Assembly. In 2015, Azad was awarded the “Outstanding Parliamentarian Award”.
In addition to Azad, today there are three more MPs retiring. They are Shamsher Singh (BJP) from the PDP, Nazir Ahmed Laway, and Mohammad Fayaz. PM Modi said that the passion of Laway and Fayaz towards the advancement of Jammu and Kashmir is noteworthy.
We are saying farewell to the Rajya Sabha MPs who played a vital role in the Rajya Sabha proceedings. I remember my many encounters with Shri Nazir Ahmed Laway and Shri Mohammad Fayaz. Their passion for the advancement of Jammu and Kashmir is noteworthy,” the PM said.
