After a glacier broke in the Dhauli Ganga valley in the Joshimath region, a major tragedy was reported in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli on Sunday. Several workers working on the hydroelectric power project at Rishi Ganga were reported missing shortly after the incident. According to the details, a dam was breached by the Tapovan power project and was washed away. To rescue the villagers and locals, ITBP and SDRF staff teams were rushed to the affected areas. In the meantime, soon after the glacier broke, the rivers in the region witnessed flash floods.

In Rishikesh and Haridwar, although the impact of the disaster may not be felt, the cities have been put on alert.

A massive flood was witnessed in Dhauliganga near Reni village following the glacier breach, where many riverbank houses were flooded.

Commenting on the incident, the local police said that the Rishiganga Power Project was damaged due to a glacier breach in the Tapovan area and advised those residing on the Alaknanda river bank to move to safe places as soon as possible.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat, who rushed to the spot and said the police and disaster management departments had been directed to deal with the situation, also confirmed the disaster.

“Government is taking all necessary steps,” said the Chief Minister.

A video posted by ANI news agency showed water levels suddenly rising in the Dhauliganga River following an avalanche near a power project at Raini village in the Chamoli district of Tapovan.

Meanwhile, to take stock of the situation and to supervise rescue and relief operations, Rawat also convened an emergency meeting.

People in the vicinity have been evacuated and as a precautionary measure, the flow of Bhagirathi River has been stopped, Rawat said, adding, the water flow of Alaknanda, Srinagar Dam and Rishikesh Dam has been emptied to prevent water flow.
