Rohit Sharma led from the front while Trent Boult starred with the ball on Tuesday in the Dream11 Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 final in Dubai as Mumbai Indians (MI) beat Delhi Capitals (DC) by five wickets and clinched their fifth IPL title.
MI went off to a flying start as Rohit, who completed 4000 IPL runs for MI, needed 157 runs to win the final, and Quinton de Kock attacked from the word go, bringing MI to 45/0 after 4 overs.
After de Kock was dismissed by Marcus Stoinis, however, their partnership was broken.
In the middle, Suryakumar Yadav replaced de Kock and announced his arrival in style, making a four and a six on the first two balls he faced before MI marched after the end of the powerplay to 61/1.
While DC bowled two tight overs, in the ninth over, Rohit went after Pravin Dubey and hit the leg-spinner for two sixes. As MI moved closer to 90 at the halfway stage of the chase, the MI skipper then completed 3000 IPL runs as captain. MI, however, lost Surya after a mix-up in the middle with Rohit in the 11th over.
Then Rohit notched up his third half-century of the season and in the 12th over took MI past the hundred-run mark.
Ishan, who had joined Rohit in the middle after the fall of Surya, continued his good run of form as at the end of the 16th he zoomed to 26 off 15 balls over.
While three wickets were selected by Anrich Nortje and Kagiso Rabada, including that of Rohit, Ishan Kishan took the team home with 8 balls to spare.
Earlier, as Jayant Yadav replaced Rahul Chahar, MI made one change to their playing XI. Meanwhile, in Qualifier 2, DC retained the team which took the field.
As Trent Boult struck on the first ball, MI was off to a cracking start, dismissing Marcus Stoinis, who edged one to the wicketkeeper. In his next over, the left-arm pacer picked up his second wicket as Ajinkya Rahane was strangled down the leg-side.
In the fourth over, MI introduced spin into the attack and the move worked right away as Jayant Yadav got Shikhar Dhawan out after his slog-sweep was missed by the left-hander.
DC wanted to do a rebuilding job with Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant, and the two delivered in the all-important final when their team needed it.
While Iyer got a life in the sixth over after Ishan Kishan was unable to complete a difficult catch despite his brilliant effort in the field, he and Pant took DC past 40. In the next three overs, the two added 18 runs before Pant clobbered two sixes off Krunal Pandya as the two finished a 50-run stand, bringing DC nearer to 80 after the end of 10 overs.
Before Pant completed a fine counterattacking fifty in the next over, DC brought up their hundred in the 14th over. After being holed out at fine-leg off Nathan Coulter-Nile’s over, however, the DC wicketkeeper got out in the same over.
Two overs later, Iyer hit two fours and completed his third fifty of the season before Boult picked up his third wicket of the game, dismissing Shimron Hetmyer, bowling his final overnight. While Iyer was not out on 65, DC finally posted 156/7 on the board.
