Snowfall in hills, light rain likely today over parts of NW India

On Friday and Saturday, a western disturbance is likely to bring widespread and heavy snowfall over parts of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh and scattered snowfall over Uttarakhand.

There may be light rain and thunder in Delhi between Friday night and Saturday morning in conjunction with the Western Disturbance.

During these two days, scattered rainfall is also very likely over Haryana, Chandigarh, and Punjab. Some parts of the Western Himalayas are also likely to record heavy snowfall today due to high humidity feeding from the Arabian Sea to northwest India, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned in its bulletin.

Thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and hail is likely today over Jammu, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab in some places; on Saturday over Uttarakhand and on both days over Madhya Maharashtra. At isolated locations above Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi, today and tomorrow, there may be thunderstorms accompanied by lightning.

Dense to very dense fog in isolated pockets is very likely over Uttar Pradesh till December 14; dense fog in isolated pockets is very likely over Bihar, Odisha, West Bengal, Sikkim, and Tripura today and tomorrow and over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Uttarakhand on Monday and Tuesday next week.

The extended range forecast by IMD shows that after December 18 over northwest India, minimum temperatures are likely to drop substantially.

Air quality ranged on Friday morning from poor to very poor category over cities and towns in northwest India. Delhi recorded an air quality index of 272 in poor category. However, Kanpur continued to record severe air quality.
