After complaining of knee pain, Team India left-arm spinner Axar Patel was ruled out of his first test against England. In the squad, Shahbaz Nadeem and Rahul Chahar were added as cover for Patel.

Patel complained of pain in his left knee during the team’s optional exercise session on Thursday, according to a BCCI release (February 4).

In the first match of the series against England, the spinner was in line to make his Test debut after Indian captain Virat Kohli had suggested that in the absence of Ravindra Jadeja, who is also out with injury, Patel could be crucial to the side’s plans.

Kuldeep Yadav, Ravichandran Ashwin and Washington Sundar are now India’s spin options in the absence of Patel, with the new arrivals of Shahbaz Nadeem and Rahul Chahar as cover for the outgoing 27-year-old.

For the first time since the action came to a stop due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Test series between India and England sees the return of international cricket in India.

The first two tests take place in Chennai, while Ahmedabad’s renovated Motera Stadium hosts the remaining two games in the series.
