On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi handed over the Arjun Main Battle Tank (MK-1A) in Chennai to Army Chief General MM Naravane. According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the tank has been designed, developed, and manufactured indigenously by the Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment, attached to the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO), along with 15 academic institutions, 8 laboratories, and several MSMEs.

Also present were Governor Banwarilal Purohit of Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, and Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam.

The Chennai Metro Rail Phase-I extension project, which has been completed at a cost of Rs 3,770 crores and commissions passenger services from Washermenpet to Wimco Nagar, will also be inaugurated by PM Modi. North Chennai will be connected to the Airport and Central Railway Station by this 9.05 km long extension.

The fourth railway line between Chennai Beach and Attipattu will be inaugurated by the Prime Minister.

This 22.1 km section, laid down at a cost of Rs.293.40 crore, crosses the districts of Chennai and Thiruvallur and eases traffic from the port of Chennai. This section links the port of Chennai and the port of Ennore and passes through large yards, providing operational flexibility for train movement.

The Railway Electrification Section at Villupuram – Cuddalore – Mayiladuthurai – Thanjavur, and Mayiladuthurai-Thiruvarur will also be inaugurated by PM Modi.

The electrification of this 228 km route, completed at a cost of Rs 423 crores, would allow free flow of traffic without the need for a change of traction between Chennai Egmore and Kanyakumari and would result in fuel cost savings of Rs 14.61 lakh per day.

For the extension, renovation, and modernization of the Grand Anicut Canal System, he will also lay the foundation stone. In the delta districts, the canal is important for irrigation.

The modernization of this canal will take place at a cost of Rs 2,640 crores and will lead to an improvement of the capacity of the canals to carry water.

The Prime Minister will also lay the foundation stone for IIT Madras’ Discovery Campus.

In the first phase, the campus will be constructed at Thaiyur near Chennai at an estimated cost of Rs 1,000 crores over an area of 2 lakh sqm.
