Actor Urmila Matondkar joined the Shiv Sena on Tuesday in the presence of Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray of Maharashtra at his ‘Matoshree’ residence.

The wife of Uddhav Thackeray, Rashmi Thackeray, tied a thread called ‘Shiv bandhan’ to the actor’s hand. Also present were Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar and other senior Sena leaders.

The party had recommended her name as a member of the legislative council (MLC) appointed through the Governor’s quota before Matondkar officially joined the Shiv Sena on Tuesday.

In 2019, on the Congress ticket against the sitting BJP MP Gopal Shetty, she contested the Lok Sabha elections. She subsequently resigned from Congress.

Matondkar had taken a stand against Kangana Ranaut earlier this year for calling Mumbai’ Pak occupied Kashmir ‘and supporting the Shiv Sena on the agenda of the Marathi Manoos.

Matondkar’s entry will be a major boost for the Sena, especially when it comes to consolidating the Marathi voters.
