While the party filed a PIL challenging the government order with the Madras High Court, the Court itself challenged how and why the Yatra was allowed to proceed without obtaining government permission.

In view of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Tamil Nadu government refused the BJP permission to conduct the procession. As always, party members were aware of the same thing and proceeded to coordinate the yatra from various places in the state. BJP President Murugan of Tamil Nadu and other party members have been arrested by police during their Vel Yatra attempts.
