Lohri, which is mostly celebrated by people from Punjab, is observed annually on the same date every year, as per the Gregorian calendar. It is celebrated on the eve of Sankranti Maghi/Makar, a day that marks the Sun’s northward transit. People light a bonfire in the evening and gather all around it to pay obeisance to the sacred fire. Popcorn, Til (sesame seeds), Gur (jaggery), Moongphali (peanuts), Poha (flattened rice), etc. are also tossed as offerings into the sacred fire. As a mark of respect to the Fire God, some even walk around the fire. And the celebrations begin once the rituals are performed. Dance performances by Bhangra and Gidda are integral aspects of Lohri, and so are folk songs.
