The Makar Sankranti festival is celebrated in northern India, which is called Pongal in the south, with the sun in Uttarayan. Pongal is one of Tamil Nadu’s biggest festivals and is celebrated with great fanfare. This special festival lasts for 4 days and for a good harvest, people thank and pray to the Lord Sun. The Pongal festival marks the beginning of the Tamil calendar’s first month. This year, the Pongal Festival will begin on Thursday, January 14, and will end on Sunday, January 17.
Pongal is celebrated as Bhogi Pongal on the first day, Thai Pongal on the second day, Mattu Pongal on the third day, and Kannum Pongal on the fourth day. In these four days, for their loved ones, individuals share happiness and wish for a prosperous life. Messages of good wishes are extended as well.
