Poila Boishakh, also known as Pohela Boishakh, is observed today. The first day of the Bengali calendar, Pohela Boishak was commemorated with a Google Doodle. “Whether at home or abroad, Bengalis around the world warmly greet one another with Shubho Noboborsho, the traditional way of wishing each other a prosperous and happy New Year…,” Google wrote on its website.

The world’s largest search engine wrote about today’s Doodle: “After dawn, one of the most traditional Pohela Boishakh celebrations takes place in Dhaka’s Ramna Park, beneath an ancient Banyan tree. Mangal Shobhajatra is a vibrant carnival procession that begins at Dhaka University’s Institute of Fine Arts. Young and old mingle in the festive spirit as they don colourful masks and parade with massive cutouts of animals to represent Bengali cultural diversity, heritage, and identity.”
