Ambedkar Jayanti 2021: On April 14, Ambedkar Jayanti commemorates Bhimrao Ambedkar’s birth. Ambedkar, who was born on April 14, 1891, dedicated his life to the upliftment of the country’s backward communities, including Dalits, minorities, and Scheduled Caste (SC)/ Scheduled Tribe (ST), and is best known for drafting the country’s constitution.

PM Narendra Modi recently declared that the birth anniversaries of B R Ambedkar and Jyotiba Phule would be celebrated as ‘Tika Utsav,’ a four-day festival aimed at increasing vaccination coverage for priority classes (ages above 45). On April 14, the central government has declared a holiday.

– As a Dalit, Ambedkar spoke out against the social injustices experienced by the country’s backward communities. In his famous essay “No peon, no water,” he emphasised the hardships faced by Dalits. The essay recalls a time when Ambedkar was denied access to clean drinking water. On March 31, 1995, the Indian government enacted the Prevention of Atrocity (POA) Act to protect the rights of Dalits.

– Ambedkar is known as the “Father of the Indian Constitution” because, while serving as India’s law minister from August 29, 1947, to January 24, 1950, he drafted the country’s constitution, which went into effect on January 26, 1650.

– He was also influential in shaping the country’s economy. Ambedkar established the Finance Commission of India in 1951 and played a key role in the formation of the Reserve Bank of India, which operates under his guidelines and ideas.

– On March 31, 1990, Ambedkar was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, for his contributions.
