The International Dance Day was established in 1982 by the Dance Committee of the International Theatre Institute (ITI). ITI was UNESCO’s primary partner in the performing arts. Since its inception, ITI has relied on eminent dancers and choreographers to create the message that must be broadcast around the world.

The significance of International Dance Day

The International Dance Committee of ITI established the International Dance Day and decided to observe it on April 29th. The date was chosen to commemorate the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre, known as the father of modern ballet. The goal of International Dance Day is to celebrate dance, revel in its universality, and break down all political, cultural, and ethnic barriers. The day’s goal is to bring people together through a common language—dance.

What is the significance of International Dance Day?

Every year, the International Dance Committee of ITI and the ITI Executive Council select an outstanding choreographer or dancer to send a message around the world. However, due to the COVID 19 pandemic, this year’s International Dance Day events will take place entirely online.
