National Mathematics Day 2020: National Mathematics Day is celebrated on 22 December to commemorate the birth of Indian mathematical genius Srinivasa Ramanujan. For budding mathematicians in the country who want to pursue a career but are unable to continue their higher education due to lack of funding, here is a list of institutes and organisations that offer scholarships and fellowships to students who want to pursue a career in mathematics.

The Institute of Mathematical Sciences provides doctoral, post-doctoral, and post-graduate scholarships. Junior research fellowships are awarded to doctoral students. Fellowships include a monthly stipend ranging from Rs 25,000 to 28,000. While for post-doctoral fellowships, the stipend varies from Rs 30,000 to 40,000 per month.

For both junior research and postdoctoral fellowships, applicants need to have a PhD. Fellowships are awarded for up to five years, the duration of which may be extended on the basis of the candidate’s performance. Candidates are selected through written tests and interviews.

The Chennai Mathematical Institute is offering a scholarship programme for its undergraduate programme. The eligibility of the candidates will be reviewed every semester and the renewal of the scholarship will depend on their academic performance.

Students eligible for a full scholarship will receive a dispensing fee and a monthly allowance of Rs 4000, while half of the scholarship will consist of a dispensing fee. In the meantime, all students will receive an additional monthly scholarship of Rs 1000.

Indian Statistical Institute offers six months of research fellowships at the postgraduate and postdoctoral levels. Applicants will receive a stipend of Rs 16,000 in their first and second year, while Rs 18,000 in subsequent years. Applicants with a postgraduate degree in statistics, mathematics, electronics, and computer science may apply for the programme. Indian Institute of Science (IISc Bangalore) is offering an integrated PhD programme in mathematical sciences. The amount of the scholarship offered varied from Rs 16,000 to 35,000, depending on the merits of the students. In addition, the institute offered Rs 31,000 to 35,000 fellowships to PhD students, Rs 12,400 to MTech, MTech (residential), MDes programme students. The institute also provides government scholarships, fellowships to selected students who are GATE/JEST/JAM and ME/MTech/MSc qualified.

Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR): The Center for Applicable Mathematics, TIFR, has an integrated PhD programme in mathematics, among other doctoral programmes. For the Integrated PhD programme, eligible students receive a monthly fellowship of Rs 21,000, while fellowships between Rs 31,000 and 35,000 for other PhD students. Student fellowships also have accommodation facilities. The admission process usually begins every year in August.
