According to an overseas report, the rumoured Suzuki Jimny five-door is expected to be unveiled this year ahead of its showroom arrival in 2021.

Autocar India claims that Indian exports of the three-door Suzuki Jimny have begun and that the five-door unveiling is “six months away”

The magazine says that the three-door Suzuki Jimny built in India is identical to the version produced at the Suzuki plant in Kosai, Japan, where Australian vehicles are produced.

The Indian production line has the ability, the magazine says, to produce both right- and left-hand drive vehicles. For Latin America, the first 184 examples are reportedly destined.

The report by Autocar India states that the Indian launch of “a five-door version (is) expected six months after exports begin.”

Sources close to Maruti Suzuki reported by Autocar India claimed the five-door version will be longer than the three-door version and will be powered by the same 1.5-liter ‘K15B’ petrol engine matched to a low-range transfer case.

Suzuki Australia refused to comment on the speculation about the five-door Suzuki Jimny, or whether, if one became available, it would be sold here.

Although Suzuki Australia currently does not expect to receive three-door Jimnys from India and will continue to originate from Japan, the additional production capacity may provide some relief for local buyers forced to wait six to 12 months.

Suzuki Australia is currently sourcing its Baleno hatchback from the Indian manufacturing plant of the brand, as well as other Hungarian (Vitara) and Japanese models (Swift and Jimny).
