History Of Devutthana Ekadashi

The Devutthana Ekadashi marks the conclusion of the period of the Chaturmass. It consists of the months of Shravana, Bhadrapada, Ashwina, and Kartik, ending with Devutthana Ekadashi. It is considered that after four months, Lord Vishnu wakes up from his yogic sleep. Lord Vishnu rests on the coiled body of Adishesha in the ocean bed during this four-month period. It is known as Devutthana Ekadashi or Prabodhini Ekadashi, as he wakes up on this day. Lord Vishu is also believed to have married Goddess Vrinda (Tulsi) to Devutthana Ekadashi the next day. From the next day of Devutthana Ekadashi, the ritual of Tulsi Vivah is also observed in several households in India. On the next day of Devutthana Ekadashi, people worship the holy basil plant.

Devutthana Ekadashi importance

For events such as marriage, tonsuring or housewarming ceremonies, the Chaturmas period is considered as inauspicious. During this period, devotees do not conduct any major good event and wait for it to be overcome so that they can organize such auspicious ceremonies. The Devutthana Ekadashi 2020 will therefore mark the beginning of India’s marriage season. On Devutthana Ekadashi 2020, people keep a fast to get rid of the burden of sins they might have committed and after their death, they also seek refuge in Vaikuntha. It is Lord Vishnu’s heavenly abode.
